LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN TO THE GDN

(In response to a particularly bitter letter published on May 31)

Dear Editor,

Following the advertisements for our end of season celebrations that you kindly published last week, please permit me to provide your readers with clarification on the origin and purpose of the Bahrain True Blues Rangers Supporters Club (‘BTBs’).

Formed almost 10 years ago, and now a fully affiliated supporters club, the primary objective is to create a sociable environment in which fellow supporters can watch televised games, whilst generating funds that are donated to both local and Scottish charities.

The BTBs have a long association with local children’s charities, and guided by Dreena Rogers, a tireless fundraising campaigner, we have raised considerable amounts for Bahrain Mobility and supported the excellent work and care provided at the Oncology Unit at Salmaniya Hospital. In keeping with our Scottish heritage, we also make an annual donation to Erskine Hospital which provides nursing and medical care for ex-service men and women.

Our biggest fund raising event in 2008 was a momentous Sportsman’s Charity Dinner held on 6th March 2008 at the British Club, where a sell out audience of more than 250 people were entertained by Nader Shaheen and Scottish comedian Andy Cameron. We are particularly grateful to the Management and Executive Committees of both The British Club and Dilmun Club respectively, for their continued support and for reaffirming their willingness to host our monthly meetings and functions during the forthcoming season.

The end of season event held on Thursday 29th May, as advertised, was celebration of a year that, on the field, included winning both domestic cup competitions, reaching a European Cup Final for the first time in 36 years, and despite playing 68 games, taking the league campaign to the wire.

More importantly, it was a celebration of the small differences we have made to the lives of some less fortunate than ourselves and whose circumstances, through no fault of their own, make the result of a football match irrelevant.

We are already looking forward to the 2008/09 season and welcome anyone interested in joining this most eclectic group of individuals. We can be contacted at bahraintrueblues@gmail.com

Yours sincerely,

ALISTAIR MACLEOD
Chairman
Bahrain True Blues Rangers Supporters Club
